Adey Steel has completed the manufacture and supply of a new triple span footbridge at Meiklemill Bridge.
The original wooden bridge at Ellon in Aberdeenshire, which spans the River Ythan, provides an important route for the local community, connecting Meiklemill Primary School with Gordon Park and Ellon Primary School. However, damage sustained several years ago during Storm Frank led to the decision to replace the 45-year-old timber structure.
The Lougborough-based specialist steel infrastructure specialist was awarded the contract to fabricate the replacement footbridge, including a centre cambered section measuring 23m x 2.5m (and weighing 13.4 tonnes). Each of the end ramp spans were 16m long and weighed six tonnes.
The project was delivered to 1090 EXC3 CE Marking classification with 10% non-destructive and 100% visual weld inspection carried out by third party inspectors. The parapet handrailing sections were standardised across all but a small number of bespoke raked panels and full trial assembly of the bridge section and parapet panels was carried out at the Adey Steel headquarters in Loughborough prior to delivery to the specialist painters ahead of final inspection and then installation.
